Playing from different types of greenside bunkers requires a mix of technique and strategy. Here are some tips for various situations:

1. Soft Sand Bunker

  • Setup: Open the clubface slightly and position the ball forward in your stance.

  • Stance: Widen your stance for stability.

  • Swing: Use a full swing, focusing on hitting the sand a couple of inches behind the ball. This will help lift the ball out gently.

  • Follow Through: Ensure you follow through to avoid deceleration, which can lead to flubbing the shot.

2. Firm Sand Bunker

  • Setup: Keep the clubface open, but adjust your ball position to be more centered.

  • Stance: A narrower stance can help with balance.

  • Swing: Focus on striking the ball directly rather than the sand. A more descending blow can help with firm lies.

  • Follow Through: Follow through confidently, as a full swing helps carry the ball.

3. Wet Sand Bunker

  • Setup: Open the clubface and position the ball slightly forward.

  • Stance: Maintain a stable base, as wet sand can be more slippery.

  • Swing: Focus on a controlled, shorter swing, as wet sand will hold the ball down more. Aim to hit just behind the ball.

  • Follow Through: A balanced follow-through is essential for control.

4. Thin Bunker Lies (Hardpan)

  • Setup: Open the clubface, but keep the ball more towards the middle of your stance.

  • Stance: A narrower stance can provide better control.

  • Swing: Use a steeper angle of attack and focus on hitting the ball first, as the sand is less forgiving.

  • Follow Through: Ensure a smooth follow-through to maintain balance.

5. High Lip Bunker

  • Setup: Choose a more lofted club, open the face, and position the ball forward.

  • Stance: Wider for stability, especially if you need to make a powerful swing.

  • Swing: Focus on a full swing and generating enough speed to get over the lip. Aim to strike behind the ball to help lift it.

  • Follow Through: A high follow-through will help ensure the ball gets airborne.

General Tips

  • Practice: Spend time practicing different lies and sand conditions to develop feel and confidence.

  • Stay Calm: Bunker shots can be tricky; focus on your technique and visualize your shot.

  • Use the Right Club: Consider the distance and type of shot needed. A lob wedge is often best for short, delicate shots, while a sand wedge can be great for longer bunker shots.

By adapting your technique to the specific conditions of the bunker, you can improve your chances of getting up and down. Happy golfing!
